I thought I would share a little bit with you about how I built the company that you saw a few slides ago. What were some of the management philosophies and why does this matter to you? Fair question. The philosophies that we have are pretty consistent with the philosophies of successful companies around – anywhere. Maybe somewhat differ here and there but there are many, many similarities.
So when you’re out looking for jobs, when you’re out talking to people, maybe this will help you have an idea as to what is important to them. Let’s start with people – of course, the most important thing. Let’s start with people.
Since I was little, my father used to always say, “Genius comes in all packages.” I thought he was trying to explain the way, the different kind of crazy from my siblings, but actually over time as I started working, I realized that genius really does come in all packages. What does that mean? It means that – don’t genericize yourself. You want to be different. You want to look at the world in a different way. You want to approach problem-solving in a different way. You want to be a different kind of person. When we first started out, we called ourselves “The Island of Misfit Toys.” Does that sound familiar to anybody? Not sure but this clip may help remind you.
The point of that ridiculous bit is again trying to reinforce that different skills and different talents come in different-looking packages. Know that about yourself and know that about the workplace.
There’s another one: Take the worst job in the best place. Of all the decisions that I made, I think the most important one that worked out really well for me was to work in places in Goldman Sachs and CitiBank. Starting out, I think it is less critical that you get the dream job that you think you’re supposed to have and much more critical that you’re exposed to excellence, that you are exposed to an organization that knows how to get things done and I can’t stress that enough. Being in a top quality place, even if it’s the worst job in that place.
Back to people again: “Hire people who are their own worst critic.” What I would suggest to you is, if this is what I’m looking for or we look for in hiring people, become that person. Become your own worst critic. Become tough on yourself. Also, be nice to yourself as well and reward yourself when something good happens. But think about it: Am I being the best person I can be? Am I doing the best work that I can do? Because that’s what employers look for.
